Paper Cutting (Chūn春&兔子tù zi)

Chinese New Year is coming this week. This week we will be sharing Chinese culture with everyone. To celebrate we will be teaching students how make paper cutting decorations. You can put the decorations on the walls of your house for good luck. If they come out well, you might even want to frame them.


The Chinese Spring Festival


  1. Spring is coming! Spring is the season

  2. The Spring Festival is the celebration of the Lunar New Year. You celebrate by putting up red signs for good luck, writing the Chinese character ‘FU,” cut paper decorations, display paper lanterns, put up decorations, visit relatives, prepare and eat food, give out and receive red envelopes, etc.

  3. This year, to share the Chinese culture, we are teaching students how to cut a paper decoration in the shape of a lantern with the Chinese character “春” which is pronounced ”Chūn.” This character translates to “Spring.” When spelled out as “春节” it is pronounced “Chūnjié,” which translates to “New Year.”

  4. This Chinese New Year is also the year of the rabbit. For paper cutting, some students will also get to pick to cut out some rabbit patterns to frame and decorate on your walls.

  5. This Chinese New Year is on January 22. Due to this event following the lunar calendar, Chinese New Year is not always on the same date.
