Interview With The President Of The SJSU Wushu Club

Justin Lai, a student of SKZ, is currently attending San Jose State University. Before leaving for college, Justin had reached IWSD 3rd Degree Black Belt and was officially instituted as a Kungfu National Team Member.

Justin would regularly attend classes in SKZ with his brother Kyle who is now attending UC Merced and had reached IWSD 1st Degree Black Belt. During his days in SJSU he is now playing a balancing act between his academics and maintaining a club.

We were all surprised to see Justin visit us and proclaim that he had become the president of the SJSU Kungfu Club. Discussing how his Kungfu journey on SJSU, he discusses the challenges of maintaining and growing a club.

He mentions how fascinating it is to gather Kungfu practitioners from other schools all with their own styles and forms.

He also teaches club members with no experience in Kungfu at all. He talked about traveling to Pennsylvania to participate in the Annual Collegiate Kungfu Tournament. A tournament where people fly over from all over the country in order to attend and participate in. Justin mentions that their next national tournament will take place at UC Davis.

As Justin visited during a class session, he also recognized a number of people in the classroom. Some people had grown a lot and some appeared mostly unchanged.

He was happy to see the growth of the next generation and left imparting his knowledge to some younger students. That if you enjoy Kungfu after graduating high school, find a club for it in college. If that club doesn’t exist, make one.

The most important thing is fostering and growing a community where you can keep doing what you love.
